Scientific & Medical Writing / Editing

Background
I hold a BSc in genetics, a PhD in molecular cell biology, and conducted my postdoctoral research on viral and human genome evolution. Since leaving the lab in 2005 I have worked in diverse life sciences research fields in both the academic and private sectors.
I previously worked in a number of in-house writing and editing-based roles, and have been freelancing part-time since 2007 and full-time since 2020. I have extensive and diverse experience as a grant writer, medical writer, science writer, scientific editor, science communicator, writing coach, and project manager. I have additional professional experience as a knowledge translation specialist and product manager.
I’m originally from York, England, and now live and work in beautiful North Vancouver, Canada, on the traditional, unceded territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish, and Musqueam First Nations.
Further details are available on my LinkedIn profile and author site; references available upon request.
Working with me
If you’re interested in working with me, please drop me a line with some basic information about your project, including any hard deadlines. If I’m available to work to your preferred timeline, we’ll set up a brief introductory call and then proceed to developing a scope of work.
For editing projects, I will ask for a representative sample of the full text. Edits will be provided to you as tracked changes and comments in Microsoft Word. I’m happy to go over edits with you on a phone or video call, but please let me know in advance if you’re interested in this service so I can build it into our scope of work.
I generally quote on an hourly rate, up to a maximum number of hours for the full project, so there are no surprises.
I live in the Pacific time zone and usually work regular office hours, but I’m flexible, especially close to grant deadlines.
A note on AI
I sometimes use generative and other forms of AI in my background research and preparation: for example, to rapidly synthesize the most recent literature on topics on which I am not fully up to date, or to help me brainstorm my initial ideas. However, all text that I write for clients is my own; I will never send you AI-generated content. I also guarantee that I will never risk your intellectual property by inputting your own text, or any other proprietary or confidential information, into AI software that may use it to train the next version of the tool.
If your target journal or funding agency requires full disclosure of any use of AI, please let me know before I begin work and I will document all use of AI in my background research and preparation.
